A Gig Shouldn't Cost The Earth - ATL Introducing

November 02, 2021

With the UK currently hosting the COP26 conference, everyone is talking about climate change.🌎

And rightfully so—recent scientific reports have shown that climate change is rapidly accelerating, and it is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges facing humanity right now. As the live music industry revolves around travel, it got me thinking: how can musicians, fans, festivals and venues operate in a more sustainable way?

'A Gig Shouldn't Cost The Earth' is a 20 minute documentary I produced for ATL Introducing, BBC Radio Ulster, exploring the music industry’s impact on climate change.

Massive thanks to all my contributors: Charlie Wayne from Black Country New RoadDevan, Khalid & Andrew from Wild Rivers, Lara Seaver from Reverb.org, Tijl Couzij from Into The Great Wide Open Festival and Daoud Al-Janabi from Norman Records, for lending their voices to this piece. And thanks to Rory, Aine, Gemma and the team at ATL for helping bring this package to life.

It’s so important that we face up to the reality of climate change. As musicians, fans, and industry experts, we must look at our actions and see how we can do better.

The piece is up now on BBC Sounds to stream, just search ‘ATL Introducing’.
